Bayern Munich signed me because I am one of the best – Pavard

France World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard has said that Bayern Munich acquired his signature because he is one of the best full-backs in the Bundesliga. The young right-back played a crucial role for Les Bleus during the 2018 World Cup where they were crowned champions for the second time in their history.

As such, there was always expected to be widespread interest in his signature, but Bayern acted at the earliest possibility to secure his services from next season. Speaking to Canal Football Club, Pavard said that he has been consistent in the German top-flight and that has been the prime reason behind him joining the Bundesliga holders.

He said: “I didn’t sign for Bayern just because of that one shot. It’s because I’m one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. Defensively, I’m strong – and technically also. I’m full of confidence and I’m hungry for titles. After winning the World Cup, I’m hugely motivated to win more. For me, it was only Bayern: I couldn’t see myself going to any other club. You don’t say no to Bayern – they are the best club in Germany and they’re always winning lots of titles.”

With the arrival of Pavard, Joshua Kimmich is likely to slot into the heart of the midfield where he has occasionally featured for the Bavarian giants over the past few seasons. Meanwhile, Bayern have failed to make progress in the Champions League in the past few campaigns but they seem determined to put things right next term with a mega spending spree.

The German giants have been reluctant to spend big in the transfer market unlike other elite European clubs, but that stance appears to have changed with a combined £100m spent on Pavard and Lucas Hernandez to bolster the right and left-back positions respectively ahead of next season.
