Mount is one of four players who have pulled out of the England squad for the final two World Cup 2022 qualifiers in Group I of the UEFA qualifiers. The other three players are Southampton skipper James Ward-Prowse and the Manchester United duo of Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw.

Chelsea midfielder Mount has missed two of the last three games at his West London club due to illness on the back of his three-goal performance against Norwich City. The England midfielder scored three goals on the way to a 7-0 home win over the Canaries in the Premier League. After the league win over Norwich City, Mount came on as a second half substitute as Chelsea beat Southampton on penalties in their Carabao Cup round of 16 tie. He was the only Chelsea player to miss his spot kick during the penalty shootout as his team sealed a place in the quarterfinals. The Blues will face Brentford in the West London Derby for a place in the semi-finals. He missed the games against Malmo FF (Champions League) and Newcastle United (Premier League). He made his return against Burnley in the league at the weekend. Mount played the final five minutes of the disappointing 1-1 draw at home to the Clarets.

Southampton midfielder Ward-Prowse will miss the abovementioned England games due to illness, while Manchester United left-back Shaw has also pulled out of the newest England squad after he suffered concussion during the Manchester Derby clash with Manchester City  in the league at the weekend. For Rashford, he will sit out the two England matches to concentrate on his full recuperation from shoulder injury.
